The Outer Worlds – Who to Choose: Edgewater or Botanical Lab?

One of the first major choices in The Outer Worlds occurs during the Comes Now the Power main quest. You will be forced to choose which faction to divert power to in the Emerald Vale. You can choose to support Edgewater led by Reed or the Deserters led by Adelaide. Below you will find how each choice plays out.

 

Divert Power to Edgewater

Below are the rewards for choosing to divert power to the Edgewater.

  • 2828 EXP
  • Spacer’s Choice Rep Increases
  • Deserters Rep Decreases
  • Parvati is happy with your choice

 

After diverting the power of Edgewater, you will return to the Botanical Lab to collect their power regulator. In the generator room, you are confronted by Adelaide who is furious at your decision and wants to know why you chose Edgewater over her. There are two options here that you can pick. Either you leave Adelaide alone or you persuade/force Reed to resign from his position. Regardless of which you choose, the power regulator is yours.

 

If you choose to let Adelaide wallow in her misery, you can talk both Thomas and Grace into returning to Edgewater. If you have given Thomas at least one of the engineering volumes, you can have him return as an engineer instead of a cannery worker. This feels like a nobody wins scenario as things don’t really change in Edgewater and the Botanical Lab is now defenseless.

 

If you choose to make Reed resign, you can talk Adelaide into running Edgewater and have Thomas and Grace return with her. Note that Thomas can return as an engineer if you gave him at least one of the engineering volumes from The Frightened Engineer side quest. If you do your due diligence, you can persuade Reed to leave town peaceful. If not, then you will be forced to take him out. Either way, Adelaide will return to Edgewater bringing the gift of food and curing the plague. I personally felt that this was the best/good ending all things considered.

 

Divert Power to Botanical Lab

Below are the rewards for choosing to divert power to the Botanical Lab.

  • 2828 EXP
  • Spacer’s Choice Rep Decrease
  • Deserters Rep Increase

 

After diverting power to the Botanical Lab, you will have to return to the Edgewater Cannary to claim the power regulator. As you approach the basement of the cannary housing the regulator, Reed will be waiting to confront you. He will ask why you made your choice and will tell you to leave if you value your life. If your intimidate is 30, then you can tell them to get lost, otherwise, you will have to take him and all of his guards out. You will then grab the power regulator and exit the cannary to find the people of Edgewater not amused about the power going out as the people in the sick room are trapped there.

If you travel to the Botanical Lab and talk to Adelaide, she will thank you for diverting the power to them and mention that she wishes she could see the look on Reed’s face. You also learn that she has had it out for Reed since the beginning and that she plans on turning away the people of Edgewater to keep their home pure. All in all, this is probably the worst/bad choice of the two.

The Outer Worlds – The Illustrated Manual

Obtained: Talk to Vicar Max in Edgewater and agree to look for the book he is seeking.

 

Objective(s):

  • Search the Collector’s Domicile
  • Retrieve the Journal
  • Return to the Vicar

 

Search the Collector’s Domicile

Follow the objective to reach the Abandoned Outpost north of Edgewater (east of the Emerald Vale Community Center) that is occupied by marauders. Eliminate the marauders then head into the cannery and through the door behind the counter. Examine the Collector’s Letter on the counter in this room to learn the location of the journal the Vicar is seeking.

 

Retrieve the Journal

Follow the objective west of the Abandoned Outpost to arrive at the River Hideout. You’ll know you are in the right place after spotting the the two Spacer’s Choice storage containers. Take care of the marauders here (they will be by a crashed ship) and head into the cave via the river. The journal will be located in a safe near the center of the cave (watch out for the pink mines protecting it). The safe requires lockpick 5 and a Mag-Pick to open it. If you are out of Mag-Picks, there should be two on the shelf to left of the safe. Open it and collect the Journal of M. Bakonu.

 

Return to the Vicar

Head back to Vicar Max in Edgewater and hand over the journal to compete the quest.

The Outer Worlds – The Frightened Engineer

Obtained: Talk to Thomas Kemp in the Botanical Lab and offer to give him some pointers (requires Engineering 10).

Guide to Mechanical Engineering: Volume 1

Head to the Emerald Vale Community Center located south east of the Botanical Lab and enter the building. If you haven’t been here yet, you will need to clear out the marauders. The volume can be found on the second level of the center in a working area full of desks overlooking the main doors leading outside. Return to Thomas and give him the volume.

 

Guide to Mechanical Engineering: Volume 2

Travel to Edgewater and enter the factory section of the cannery. Take the stairs up then go left. Follow the walkway around, past Phyllis Granger, until you reach the dead end with a room on the right. Enter the room to find this volume sitting on a filing cabinet. Return to Thomas and give him the volume.

 

Guide to Mechanical Engineering: Volume 3

Make your way to the geothermal plant and enter the building (you get the passcode during the Stranger in a Strange Land main quest). From the main entrance, head north (past the vending machine on the left) and through the doorway. Keeping going forward down a flight of stairs and through another doorway (this door will need to be unlocked from the other side) bringing you to a metal walkway. Turn right then follow the walkway down a ramp, taking a right at the bottom through another doorway. Once you pass through the doorway, take a left and go straight across the room (heading north) passing some crates coming to yet another doorway. Enter the doorway to arrive in a room with a giant funnel like container holding some red/orange liquid (a man named Higgins will be telling you to go away). Work your way to the bottom of this room to locate Higgins. This volume will be laying against the wall near his sleeping bag. Return to Thomas and give him the volume. Giving him all three volumes will complete the quest.

The Outer Worlds – Die, Robot

Obtained: Talk to Ludwig Miller at the Edgewater Landing Pad and agree to join the Resistance.

 

Objective(s):

  • Deal with the Mechanical Scout
  • Return to Ludwig
  • Find Ludwig’s Secret Weapon
  • Return to Ludwig
  • Retrieve a Logic Module
  • Return to Ludwig

 

Deal with the Mechanical Scout

Follow the objective just north of Edgewater to arrive at the Junkyard. There you will find a damage robot. Use Parvati to repair the robot (she also gives him the name Jeremy) or repair it yourself if you have a high enough repair. Shooting it is also an option.

 

Return to Ludwig

Report back to Ludwig at the Landing Pad and tell him not to worry about the scout anymore.

 

Find Ludwig’s Secret Weapon

Enter Edgewater and proceed to the bathroom of the Cantina (door left of the bar). Collect Ludwig’s Bundle from behind the toilet seat in the bathroom

 

Return to Ludwig

Report back to Ludwig at the Landing Pad and hand over the bundle.

 

Retrieve a Logic Module 

Ludwig will task you with finding an intact logic module from the Emerald Vale Geothermal Plant. You will need the passcode from Reed (obtained as part of the main quest Stranger in a Strange Land) to enter the plant. With the passcode in hand, head to the plant northwest of Edgewater. Enter through the main entrance and head north (past the vending machine on the left) through the doorway. Keeping going forward down a flight of stairs. To unlock the sealed door at the bottom, head in the small room to the left of the sealed door and enter the passcode into the monitor. Once opened, head through the door to reach a metal walkway. From there, take a right and head down the stairs. At the bottom, take a right through the door. Use the panel on the left side, which will trigger two robots to attack. Once you defeat them, head through the door across from the panel and follow the path across a long walkway. Take the first right into a room and look behind the turned table on the right to find the Security Chief’s body. Loot the Geothermal Security Chief’s Keycard. Head down the stairs in the room to come into the room that you were previously in when you activated the panel. Head straight ahead and take the last door on the right. Take the stairs on the right up and head through the door on the left. Use the keycard to open the locked door to the right of the next set of stairs leading up and enter the storage room. The logic module will be on the shelf straight ahead.

 

Return to Ludwig

Head back to Ludwig at the landing pad and speak with him to hand over the module to complete the quest.

The Outer Worlds – A Few Kindred Spirits

Obtained: Talk to Grace Romero near the entrance to the Botanical Lab.

 

Objective(s):

  • Search Zoe’s Home for Clues
  • Find Zoe
  • Convince Zoe to Return
  • Return to Grace

 

Search Zoe’s Home for Clues

Follow the objective into the Botanical Lab and locate Zoe’s house on the south end of town (the building next to where Stefan Garcia is sitting). You can talk to Stefan Garcia first if you wish but it is unnecessary. You just need to examine the journal entry on the table to the right immediately when you enter Zoe’s house.

 

Find Zoe

Head to the Abandoned Industrial Zone (east of the Botanical Lab). Zoe Chandler will be chilling next to Guillaume Antrim, who needs to be killed for the Fistful of Fingers side quest. After you take care of all the marauders surrounding her, head up and talk with her.

 

Convince Zoe to Return

If you have persuade 15 or intimidate 54, you can convince her to return. If you don’t, you will have to head back to Stefan Garcia in the Botanical Lab and ask to borrow his copy of the Masked Marketeer. In order to borrow the book, you will need lie 10 or persuade 10. Once you get the book, head back to Zoe and use it to entice her to come back.

 

Return to Grace

Return to Grace at the Botanical Lab and speak with her to complete the quest.

The Outer Worlds – Fistful of Digits

Obtained: Talk to Constable Reyes in the Edgewater Constable building (located near Parvati’s house) and ask her about dealing with the marauders.

 

Objective(s):

  • Collect Doc Maybell’s Finger
  • Collect Bertie Cotton’s Finger
  • Collect Guillaume Antrim’s Finger
  • Turn in Fingers

 

Collect Doc Maybell’s Finger

Doc can be found northwest of the Geothermal Power Plant in a marauder hideout hidden in a cave. Take out the marauders and collect his finger.

 

Collect Bertie Cotton’s Finger

Bertie can be found in marauder encampment located west of Edgewater and north of the Unreliable. Head there and deal with the marauders. When that’s done collect the finger from Bertie’s corpse.

 

Collect Guillaume Antrim’s Finger

Guillaume can be found in the Abandoned Industrial Zone north of Edgewater protected by a big group of marauders. Defeat them all and collect his finger.

 

Turn in Fingers

Head back to Constables Reyes in Edgewater and hand over the fingers to collect your reward. Hand over all three fingers to complete the quest.

The Outer Worlds – The Long Tomorrow

Obtained: Talk to Martin Abernathy in his house and pass the perception check to have him tell you what’s got him worked up. Follow the dialog options about the plague and agree to do some freelance work for him (you can also lie to him while collecting the gravesite fees and tell him you know everything).

 

Objective(s):

  • Retrieve the Cache of Medicine
  • Turn in Medicine

 

*After exiting Abernathy’s house, Ester Blaine asks to speak with you. She will request that you give her the medicine instead of Abernathy.

 

Retrieve the Cache of Medicine

Exit the northwestern gate of Edgewater and follow the road north towards the objective. This will bring you to a small town occupied by marauders. Take them out as you make your way to the Emerald Vale Community Center located on the northern part of the town along the road. Enter the building to find it also overrun by marauders. Deal with them then head for the medical room on the first floor in the middle of the building. To enter the medical room, you will need to find the First Aid Room Key, which can be obtained multiple ways such as encoding one from the terminal at the reception desk if you have hack at 25, retrieving it from an enemy on the second floor in office area or from a chest in the room across from the medical room (requires locking picking 5 and 1 Mag-Pick). After opening the door, head to the left (west) side of the room to find the Cache of Medicine on a metal table. Grab it then make your way back to Edgewater.

 

Turn in Medicine

You give the medicine to Martin Abernathy, Ester Blaine or Constable Reyes to complete the quest.

The Outer Worlds – A Small Grave Matter

Obtained: Talk to Silas outside of Edgewater near the cemetery.

Collect Conrad’s Gravesite Fees

Head to the barber shop in the southern part of Edgewater (a short distance from the Spacer’s Choice Cantina) and talk to Conrad Sadik. Mention the gravesite fees to learn that he is broke. Recommend that Conrad give Silas an IOU and come up with something to hand over as collateral. After the conversation, head to the back room and examine the data pad next to a corpse to read the Letter from Phyllis. Return to Conrad and choose the persuade option “I know about Eugene” then “I found a note from Phyllis”. Keep following the rest of the dialog options to get Conrad’s IOU.

 

Collect Ludwig’s Gravesite Fees

Head to the landing pad located east of Edgewater and talk with Ludwig Miller who can be found patrolling the entrance to it. Mention that Silas sent you to him to collect the gravesite fees to receive them.

 

Collect Phyllis’s Gravesite Fees

Head to the cannery located in the northern part of Edgewater and make your way to the second level of the factory floor to find Phyllis Granger. Talk with her and mention that you are here for the gravesite fees to receive them.

 

Collect Abernathy’s Gravesite Fees

Head to Abernathy’s house to the left (west) of the cantina. Talk to Martin Abernathy and mention the gravesite fees to obtain them.

 

Return to Silas

Head back to Silas after collecting the gravesite fees from each person and speak with him to hand over the fees. If your persuade is 6 or higher, you can get extra rewards using the persuade check.

Hephaestus Vestige Part A

Location: Crypt Spire – Crypt Spire Entrance

From Hephaestus Vestige Part C, exit the room on the east side and head up the ladder at the end of the path to reach a circular platform. Cross the long walkway and enter the circular room with a lever outside at the end. The vestige will be found on the other side of the room containing the elevator under some wooden crates.

 

Hephaestus Vestige Part B

Location: Crypt Spire – Crypt Spire Entrance

From the Crypt Spire Entrance mistle, take the flight of stairs leading up and follow the path forward until you reach a small circular room with a corpse against the right wall. Head straight to reach the ladder (a shortcut that you have to find) and climb up it. At the top of the ladder, take the spiral stairs up then exit the room to come to a circular platform with a hole in the middle. Take the flight of stairs on the left and follow the path through a circular room with a chest in the middle. Defeat the two large enemies and exit out the entryway across from the chest. Keep following the path forward, arriving at a circular room with lots of pillars. Defeat all the enemies that spawn here. Exit the room via the northwest doorway and head up the stairs, passing the room with the lever outside of it. This will bring you to another platform with a ladder on the left and a room with a lever outside it on the right. Take the right path to enter a hallway. At the end of the hallway, you will enter a big circular room with a small circular room inside it. After the small circular room, take a left and follow the path out of the big circular room through a hallway. Keep following the path until you come to a circular room with a lever outside of it. Enter this room and use the elevator in the center to head down to a ledge. Exit the elevator and turn right to find this vestige in a glass cylinder.

 

Hephaestus Vestige Part C

Location: Crypt Spire – Crypt Spire Entrance

From Hephaestus Vestige Part B, head back in the elevator and take it up. When you exit the elevator, take a right and head out the doorway on your left. Follow the walkway up a flight of stairs to a circular platform. Take the stairs on your left up and head across the walkway into a small circular room. Keep following the path until you reach a big circular room with a lever outside and a lever in the center of the room. The vestige will be located in this room to the right of the lever. You will also be jumped by enemies in this room so be prepared.
