Assassin’s Creed Origins: The Curse of the Pharaohs Review – The Mummies Return

SUMMARY

Taking place four years after the events of the main game, The Curse of the Pharaohs DLC kicks off with Bayek receiving an urgent letter from Amunet. It mentions rumors about the possibility of another relic thus sending Bayek to the city of Thebes. He arrives to witness the city under attack by an ancient pharaoh. Bayek quickly learns that a curse is plaguing the city, causing deceased pharaohs to run rampant in the streets. The Pharaohs are attacking the citizens of Thebes as punishment for thieves ransacking and desecrating their tomb. It falls to Bayek to stop the curse and find the relic before the evil forces at work can have their way.

The Thebes region is home to 6 new areas to explore including the city of Thebes. As with the last expansion and main game, there are lots of places to discover like enemy outposts and hidden treasure. You can also hunt animals for extra exp and synchronize with even more viewpoints to display additional areas. This DLC also comes with a level booster that creates a copy our your save data and boosts Bayek’s level up to 45. This will allow you to play the DLC, even if you are just starting the game as the recommended level for the Curse of the Pharaohs is 44 to 45. Aside from the level increase, new abilities have been added to give Bayek an edge in combat. There are many new foes to fight such as giant scorpions, humanoid jackals like from the Mummy movies, actual mummies, and some of the pharaohs who helped shape Egypt. There are also new Phylakes to fight in the form of Jackals that can give even experienced players some trouble. Then when you get done exploring, you can turn your attention to the exceptional story and side quests focusing on ancient Egypt mythology.

OPINION

The Curse of the Pharaohs DLC really improved upon Assassin Creed Origins with its amazing combat and the mythological based story. Fighting the jackals and giant scorpions never got old and the boss battles were each unique and fun to do. It was really easy for me to lose track of time just by exploring the map and once I got hooked on the story, it was hard to stop.

RECOMMENDATION

This latest DLC is definitely worth the $20 asking price. Completing the story, exploring all of the areas, and obtaining all of the trophies took me between 15 and 18 hours to complete.
