Welcome to NGB and our walkthrough for the Steel Resolve side quest in Avowed. For this quest, you’ll need to investigate the Abandoned Homestead and Ogre’s Cave then look for a root-strangled tree and report to Ranger Acierno. Our guide will walk you through all the objectives, highlight the best strategies, and make sure you don’t miss any rewards.

How to Start the Steel Resolve Quest
To begin the Steel Resolve side quest in Avowed, speak with Ranger Acierno at Ranger Headquarters in the Emerald Stair.
Steel Resolve Walkthrough
Two senior rangers have gone missing while on duty, and Captain Acierno fears they may have been murdered by one of their own. Rangers Dorso and Casagrada were the last to see them alive.
Speak with Ranger Casagrada
Travel to Fior mes Iverno Docks to find Ranger Casagrada leaning against a wall.
When you speak with him, he’ll point you toward the Abandoned Homestead.
Speak with Ranger Dorso
Travel to the Fior Southern Gate Beacon to find Ranger Dorso and speak with her. She’ll point you toward the Ogre’s Cave.
Investigate the Abandoned Homestead
Take out the Trantons during The Trantons Bounty quest. Once you’ve cleared them all out, head to the cage and use ice (Eye of Rymrgand or an ice spell) to break the bars.
Next, speak with Ranger Verano.
Investigate the Ogre’s Cave
The Ogre’s Cave can be found in the Grim Wetlands, which is located in the northwestern section of the Emerald Stair. You’ll want to head to the Infested Camp, which is southwest of the Shatterscarp Gatehouse Beacon.
In order to access the camp, you’ll need to lockpick the door on the fence. Head through the doorway then head northwest up the path and keep going. Eventually, you’ll pass a small tent on your right and will climb up some ledges.
You’ll then reach a fortress. In order to open the doors, you’ll need to hit two generators with electricity to power them on. The first can be found at the top of the tallest ledge on the right.
The second is to the right of the closed door. You’ll need to shoot the boards blocking it!
Once inside, climb up the boards on the right to reach the scaffolding. Follow the path to find the cave on the right.
Inside the cave, you’ll find Ulrask, who is infected with the rot. When combat starts, he’ll summon skeletons, which will continue spawning throughout the entire fight. Our strategy was to focus on Ulrask and then wipe out the skeletons.
After the battle, loot the Journal of Ranger Monato from one of the people in the center of the room.
Before leaving, head to the east side and look up. Hit the generator there to open a door on the western side. Head through this newly opened door to grab the loot inside!
Search for a Root-Strangled Tree
Travel southeast of Lake Lacuna in The Wildwoods to find the search area. You’ll find the tree on the eastern side of the search area. Loot the Clandestine Note from the base of the tree.
Meet the Ranger at the Designated Location
Next, follow south of the river to find a tent near a waterfall.
Once there, speak with Ranger Dorso. You can either side with her or attack her. No matter your choice, you’ll still be able to get the One Last Trick, a unique two-handed gun.
Return to Ranger Captain Acierno
Return to Ranger Headquarters and speak with Ranger Acierno. In order to get the One Last Trick, a unique two-handed gun, select the following options:
- Massoni was right – there was a killer, and it was Ranger Dorso
- [Lie] Dorso’s dead. I killed her.
- Either option
- I have absolutely no idea. She wasn’t making much sense.
- Either option

- Dorso’s dead. I killed her.
- Down near the mouth of the river, by the waterfall.
- Dorso was trying to create the conditions for an Aedyran takeover.
