How to Start the Shadows of the Past Quest

The Shadows of the Past main story quest in Avowed will automatically begin after completing the Face Your Fears quest.

Shadows of the Past Walkthrough

Ryngrim gave Yatzli a grimoire that will dispel an arcane barrier the archmage conjured – one that blocks entry into Naku Kubel, an ancient Godless site in Shatterscarp. The path is now clear for you to enter the ruins, where Yatzli believes you will find clues to the location of the Garden – and perhaps the origins of Dreamscourge.

Journey with Yatzli to Naku Kubel and Dispel Ryngrim’s Barrier

Avowed Shadows of the Past

At the start of this quest, travel to Naku Kubel Approach in the northern part of Shatterscarp with Yatzli in your party. When you arrive, work your way through the area. Towards the top of the area, you’ll need to climb up some scaffolding to actually reach the barrier. Once you finally make it, dispel Ryngrim’s barrier using Yatzli.

Investigate Naku Kubel with Yatzli

Head inside, then work your way through the area until you reach the giant crystal. In this room, head left, go up the stairs, and speak with Numena.

Complete the Trials of the Tebaru Sanakis with Yatzli

Complete the Trial of Strength

Enter through the door just past Numena and work your way through the area, fighting off the groups of enemies. The final room with the statue in the center is the last wave of enemies. Once all enemies have been dealt with, the door will open, and the trial will be complete.

Proceed to the Second Trial

After exiting the first trial, follow the path back to the room with the giant crystal. Head right, and the bramble blocking the stairs will clear, allowing you to proceed to the second trial. Speak with Tanusas at the top of the stairs to start the trial.

Complete the Trial of Wisdom

For this trial, you’ll face a bunch of traps along your path, from axes and swinging logs to pressure plates. Make your way through, pressing the switches as you go to disable them! The room with the pressure plates is the last wave!

Proceed to the Third Trial

Once you return to the room with the giant crystal, head across the room to the other side. The vines will clear, allowing you to speak with Kutenrus.

Complete the Third and Final Trial

After speaking with Kutenrus, proceed through the next area. First, you’ll need to jump down the hole to land in some water. When you emerge, press forward. At the end of the path, Numena, Kutenrus, and Tanusas will all turn hostile. Take them out!

Examine the Ekidan Device

Once the area is clear, interact with the device on the altar in front of the mural.

Approach the Adra and Speak to Sapadal

Head through the door on the east side of the room near the mural. The plants will then clear, allowing you to interact with the giant crystal. Sapadal will then speak with you!

Escape Naku Kubel

As the platform rises, you’ll be attacked by a bunch of enemies. Just run past them all as you head through the south door. Once outside, continue making a mad dash for the entrance of the area.

Speak with Ryngrim and Lodwyn

At the entrance, you will find Ryngrim and Lodwyn speaking with each other. Once you are out of combat, speak with them! You will need to pick either to spare or destroy the ruins. You will get different god-like abilities depending on your choice.

Speak to Temerti in Thirdborn

After your decision, return to Thirdborn and speak with Temerti. She’ll be mad no matter your choice. Afterwards, the quest will complete!
