How to Start the Vahtacen’s Secret Quest
To begin the Vahtacen’s Secret quest in The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered, speak with Raminus Polus about advancement after completing the Ulterior Motives quest.
Vahtacen’s Secret Walkthrough
Speak with Irlav Jarol
Interact with the portal in the lobby to reach Irlav and speak with him.
Speak with Skaleel
Travel just south of Cheydinhal to reach Vahtacen.
Once you arrive, head inside and take a left when the path forks. Follow the tunnel to reach a ruin where you’ll find Skaleel pacing. Speak with her and tell her “Yes” to learn the details of your task.
Find the Pillar
To reach the pillar, head through the gate in the room with Skaleel using the Vahtacen Ruins Key. From there, follow the linear path to find Denel at the end. Speak with him to learn that Skaleel might have a book that could be used to decipher the Ayleid symbols.
Speak with Skaleel
Return to Skaleel and speak with her about the “Ayleid Reference”.
Read the Ayelid Reference Text
Once you’ve gotten the book, read it!
Return to Denel
Afterward, return to Denel and speak with him about the “Ayleid Reference”.
Read all the Inscriptions
Behind each of the red glowing crystals, you’ll find a tablet on the wall with glowing text. Activate each tablet to get the inscriptions.
Translate Inscriptions
Once you’ve read all the inscriptions, speak with Denel to translate them.
- av molag anyammis (north)
- Spell that does fire damage
- av mafre nagaia
- Spell that does frost damage
- magicka loria
- Spell that damages magicka
- magicka sila
- Spell that fortifies magicka
Solve the Pillar Puzzle
If you don’t know many spells, that is ok! Outside the puzzle chamber, you’ll find a chest next to a small table that contains all the spells you need!
On the pillar in the center of the room, cast the following spells (in this order!!):
- Flare (target)
- Snowball (target)
- Sever Magicka (touch)
- Elevate Magicka (target)
Once you’ve correctly solved the pillar puzzle, the pillar will move, revealing a staircase.
Investigate the Vahtacen
Head down the stairs and enter the door to Vahtacen Lorsel. Deal with the wraith then follow the path to reach a floor trap.
Skirt it to safely reach the other side of the room and stand on the platform to open up three paths. The two on the sides will be dead ends, so continue straight. In the large room, watch out for the floor trap as you continue straight towards the swinging axe traps.
In the next large room with all the hanging cages/lights, activate the stone steps on both sides of the structure in the middle. Afterward, head up the stairs on the southeast side of the large room and activate the switch on the right side at the top.
Next, head up the stairs in the center of the room and press the switch on one of the pillars.
This will reveal the Ancient Elven Helm on the pedestal in the middle of the platform.
Return to Skaleel
Bring the object to Skaleel. To quickly leave the area, head back up the stairs on the southeast side of the large room and follow the path to reach a dead end. Stand on the floor platform just before the end to lower the wall, revealing the way forward. Take a right and enter the door to return to the room with Denel.
From here, just follow the path to Skaleel.
Deliver Ayleid Artifact to Irlav
Travel back to Arcane University and speak with Irlav to complete the quest.
