How to Start the Casting Off the Veil Companion Quest
The Casting Off the Veil companion quest in The Outer Worlds 2 will automatically begin after completing the Listening for a Clue companion mission.
Casting Off the Veil Walkthrough
Investigate Central Control
Travel to Praetor, then head to the Supreme Arbiter’s Office in the northern part of the area, west of the Tomb of the Matriarch. You’ll need to pass through the Automech Production Facility to reach it. Along the way, you will have to deal with a large number of Protectorate forces.

Once you arrive at the mini-fortress, approach the main gate and speak with Warden 2nd Class Maslow guarding it. He will refuse to allow you to pass. Do not engage him in combat yet.
Back away, and Trisatan will begin a conversation with the commander. He’ll present you with two options to get into the fortress with minor bloodshed: an animal trail west of the location and a prisoner gate on the east side.

If you have Engineering 11, you can head to the east side of the compound and use it to disable the Galvanic Barrier.

Otherwise, head west and you’ll find a path through the rocks that will also bring you into the compound.

After you’re inside, head for the large building in the back. There will be an enemy guarding the entrance. You can use a Distraction Device to lure him away so that you can sneak in.
OPTIONAL: If you wish to create a shortcut from Central Control to the Tomb of the Matriarch, head straight on back once you enter Central Control to find a library. On the first bookshelf on the left, you’ll spot a suspicious book.

If you have any of the following traits you can interact with it, causing a secret door to open:
- Innovative
- Brilliant
- Dumb
- Lucky
To find the secret door, head to the back right corner of the room and interact with the wall, revealing a hidden path.

Follow it to the end and flip the switch to open the door!

Once inside the lobby, look to the right to spot a vent with the grate missing.

Pass through the vent, following the shaft to exit into a hallway with an elevator on the right. Enter the elevator and take it up to the next level.
Exit the elevator and head to the back of the room. Interact with the Pillage Order Globe.

Choose the Companion option to hear a click, unlocking a hidden floor panel. Head to the center of the room to find the floor panel and examine the Protectorate Contraption inside. While Tristan works with that, inspect the terminal, listening to the recording and viewing the message. Meanwhile, the elevator will go back down.
After you are done with the terminal, Junior Arbiter Mayhall will emerge from the elevator, telling Tristan to submit. You’ll need to convince her to stand down; otherwise, the group will have to put her down (Tristan will appreciate not killing her).

After the confrontation, you’ll have some dialogue with Tristan.
Wait to Hear from Virgil
To proceed to the next step of this quest, you’ll need to wait for Virgil to reach out. Complete another quest or do some exploring, then return to the ship. Tristan will be waiting for you near the bridge. Speak with him to learn that our next destination is the Arbiter Training Facility on Eden’s Paradise Island.
Meet Up with Virgil
Once you arrive on Paradise Island, head to the Arbiter Training Facility. If you haven’t been there yet, you can find it east of Fairfield. Enter the facility and head to the back.

There, Tristan will point out a lift that you can use to head to the facility’s depths. When you arrive, head up to the control room to meet up with Virgil. Speak with him to have the conversation cut short by a brigade of sentinels.
Fend Off the Sentinels
Head down to the lift and deal with the group of 5 sentinels. Virgil will make for the top using a different entrance, telling Tristan they can speak when they are both safe. Take the lift off to face the remainder of their forces.
Settle Things with Virgil
Once all of the enemies have been dealt with, Tristan will confront Virgil. Virgil will admit that he was the one who slayed their mentor, who turned traitor. You’ll then have to help Tristan decide whether he should kill Virgil or let him walk away. Depending on your choice, you’ll either receive Tristan’s Advanced Mod Kit from Virgil or loot it off of him.
Debrief about Virgil
Return to the ship and speak with Tristan to go over what has happened. If you spared Virgil, Tristan will comment that not having to slay his brother made him glad. He’ll then discuss the Protectorate, and you’ll need to encourage him as you see fit. Afterwards, the quest will complete.
