Aiding the Underduke Quest Guide
Before Speaking with the Underduke
Before heading to the Underduke, head south through the South Span Checkpoint and follow that path west to reach a beach where two factions will be battling. If you aid the Nine-Fingers, you’ll gain some favor with the Underduke.
This quest intersects with Jaheira’s companion quest, the High Harper. For this guide, we’ll leave out the sections regarding Jaheira. If you are interested in that content, please check out our The High Harper Guide. It will also cover everything from beating the Stone Lord to potentially recruiting the last companion.
Visit the Guildhall
Enter the Lower City of Baldur’s Gate, then head for the alley directly west of the Basilisk Gate waypoint. There will be a manhole cover on the higher passing under the stone archway. Interact with it to reach the Lower City Sewers.
At the bottom, you’ll be trapped on all sides. If you pass a perception check, you’ll notice a wall on the western side of the room can be broken. You’ll need to use magic to do this. A couple of thunderwaves worked for us. Keep in mind the wall is immune to fire.
Once you pass through it, head west to reach a locked door at the top of a stone stairway. To unlock it, you’ll need to pass a lockpicking check of 20.
Head inside and pass through the doorway straight ahead to reach Keene. Speak with her to learn about the Stone Lord, but she won’t give up everything. Head down the stairs past the bar to locate Uktar. Talk with him, and he’ll send you to the Counting House.
Deal with the Stone Lord at the Counting House
Travel to the Counting House in the southwestern part of Lower City. Go inside and speak with Head Clerk Meadhoney.
You’ll need to convince him to let you into the vaults by giving you a Vault Pass. With that in hand, you can reach the inner vault without much effort. Without the pass, you’ll have to fight the guards at two separate checkpoints before reaching the inner vault door.
Vault Door Puzzle
You’ll see 9 pressure plates at the inner vault just before the vault door. You must step on the correct pressure plate in the right sequence to unlock the vault. Make sure to split up your party so each one can stand on a different tile.
You’ll want to stand on tiles 1 – 3 – 5 – 6 in that order, with the most top-left being 1. After stepping on the 6, you should hear a click, which will result in the vault door opening.
You don’t need to find the vault password to access the vault since it’s always 1356. If you wish to do so, it can be found in the Head Banker’s Office on the 2nd floor. You’ll need to sneak up there to get it.
A cutscene will trigger upon entering the vault, where you’ll meet the infamous Stone Lord.
After it concludes, you’ll be thrown into battle against a handful of Bhaal fanatics while he and his companion flee to the sewers. You’ll need to deal with the fanatics before you can pursue them. They will start the battle by going invisible, preventing you from targeting them. You can either wait for them to stop doing that or use other means to attack them. AOE spells or abilities that let you see hidden enemies are some ways to get around this.
After you have defeated all of them, speak with Rakath Glitterbeard. He’ll give you a new quest if you return the gold that Noah ran off with.
Search the Sewers for the Stone Lord
To pursue the Stone Lord, travel to the Glitter Gala southwest of Bloomridge Park and enter the sewer from the manhole in the alleyway on the building’s east side.
Once in the sewers, you’ll want to head west towards the Abandoned Cistern. You’ll have to fight 3 enemies near the Sluice Gate controls when you arrive. Kevo Phogge will summon a horde of angry crows to assist them in the fight, so make sure you are prepared for that.
After they go down, interact with the controls to put everything on the right side of the green mark on the gauge. This will open the gate below, allowing you to head inside. Make sure to save before doing so, as a cutscene will trigger when you emerge on the other side, leading to a battle with the Stone Lord and his crew.
Warning! From this point on, we are assuming that you are not doing the High Harper quest, which means you do not have Jaheira as a companion. If she is with you, then make sure to check out our The High Harper Guide, especially before starting this next fight! On a side note, if she was a companion and died, you can still recruit the last companion with some effort.
Spoilers! The Stone Lord is Minsc!! If Jahira was a companion and died, you can still potentially recruit him if you knock him out using non-lethal attacks. If you don’t, you’ll kill Minsc for good.
Also, pay attention to the halfling Roah. She will have the stolen gold from the vault. and will make a B-line for the exit. Don’t worry about her, as you’ll be able to find her at the Guildhall following the fight.
Once all the enemies have been dealt with and Minsc knocked out, a cutscene will play out where you’ll ask the Emperor to extend his protection to Minsc. You’ll need to pass a hard intimidation check to convince him to extend his protection to Minsc. Failure to do so will result in you having to kill Minsc.
Following that, you must convince Minsc that you didn’t kill Jaheira.
After that, follow him to a side room and speak with him again. He should then officially join you at that point. Before leaving the Abandoned Cistern, loot the letter off of the fake Jaheira. You’ll need it for the rest of this quest.
Resolve the Guildhall Conflict
Now that the Stone Lord has been dealt with, return to Nine-Fingers at the Guildhall. Upon entering the building, Roah will greet you, asking if you’ll side with her to overthrow Nine-Fingers. You’ll then choose to side with Nine-Fingers or help Noah take her down. The side you choose to back will fight with you during this next fight, while the others will stand against you.
Siding With Nine-Fingers
If you choose to side with Nine-Fingers, then speak with her in her office after the Zhentarim have been silenced. She will pledge the guild to your fight against the absolute, and the Aiding the Underduke quest will be completed.
Siding with Roah
Coming some day!
