How to Start the Taking Care of Lex Quest
You will begin the Taking Care of Lex quest in The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered while progressing the Independent Thievery Thieves Guild quest.
Taking Care of Lex Walkthrough
First, you are to steal the letter from Steward Dairihill’s desk in Castle Anvil. Then get a forgery made. You’ll have to find and pay for your own forger. Then seal it with the Imperial Watch seal from the legion commander’s desk in the Imperial City. Dairihill cannot be trusted to deliver the letter. You must personally deliver the forged letter to Countess Umbranox of Anvil. You’ll be paid 500 gold, plus the cost of the forgery.
Gather some Intel
To kick things off, travel to Anvil and make your way towards Anvil Castle. You can find it in the far western part of the map in the Gold Coast. Before entering the castle, you’ll want to do some recon.

Speak with a beggar, like Penniless Olvus, and ask about Dairihill’s Office. You’ll also want to ask a guard about her. From them, you’ll learn that the steward’s office is in her private chambers, but she’s not there very much. In the mornings, she’ll be in the audience hall, and she dines with the Countess in the evenings from 8 pm to midnight.

Steal the Letter from Steward Dairihill
Now that we have some more information, proceed to Anvil Castle. Inside, you’ll want to take a right, heading past the pillar and through the door leading to the Smithy. In the Smithy, wait until it’s 8 pm, then speak with and follow Orrin. He’ll bring you to a secret door that will let you sneak past the guards.

Follow the secret path to reach the Private Quarters. You’ll need to pick an average lock to gain entry. From there, head up the stairs and interact with the movable pillar on the left side of the stone wall to open another secret door.

Go through it, then take a left and pick the lock on the wooden door ahead. This will bring you into the steward’s office. You’ll then need to pick the lock on the desk to steal the list of candidates. With the list in your possession, exit the castle following the path you just came from.

Find a Forger
With the list in hand, it’s time to find a master forger! Locate and speak with Penniless Olvus again (follow the objective marker) and ask about a master forger. For 15 gold, he’ll tell you that the man you want is the Stranger and that he lives near the Mages Guild. He likes to go out and about in the morning, so you’ll need to wait until the afternoon to find him.

To locate the stranger, head to the Abandoned House on the west side of the Mages Guild. Go inside and speak with him, asking him to forge the letter. He will agree and tell you to wait a whole day for him to finish it. He’ll expect his payment of 500 gold coins upon pickup. Wait 24 hours, then speak with him again and ask about the forged letter. He’ll give it to you after you pay up.

Seal the Letter with the Official Seal
Next up, you’ll need to stamp the letter with the official seal of the Imperial Watch. To do this, travel to the Imperial City Prison in the northeast part of the Imperial City.

There, you’ll want to enter the Imperial Legion Offices sometime after 12 am. Inside, head through the door in the back right to reach the commander’s desk. Interact with the seal on the desk to apply it to the letter.

Deliver the Letter to Countess Umbranox
Now that all of the hard stuff is out of the way, it’s time to deliver the letter to Countess Umbranox personally. Travel back to Castle Anvil and approach the Countess while she is on the throne.

Speak with her, mentioning the “New Guard Captain” to deliver the letter. She’ll read it and give you her response to deliver to the Lex.
Deliver the Response to Lex
Travel to the Imperial City, then locate Lex. He tends to be in the Temple District or wandering around the Waterfront. Speak with him and mention the New Guard Captain to hand over the letter.
Report Back to S’krivva
Hurray! Lex has been dealt with! Return to S’krivva to let her know the mission is accomplished! In addition to receiving your reward, you’ll be promoted to the rank of Shadowfoot. This gives you access to the fence, Orrin of Castle Anvil. S’krivva will also tell you that you don’t need her anymore for contracts and to keep filling the guild’s coffers. The Grey Fox will reach out when he’s ready!
