How to Start the Lost Histories Quest

You will begin the Lost Histories quest in The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered automatically while progressing the Independent Thievery Thieves Guild quest!

Lost Histories Walkthrough

S’krivva of the Thieves Guild has requested that you find out what happened to the thief named Theranis. He was sent to steal a book entitled Lost Histories of Tamriel from the wizard in Castle Skingrad. Your job is to recover the book. S’krivva doesn’t care if Theranis delivers it to her or you do. You’ll receive 400 gold coins either way.

Gather info on Theranis

Start of this job by traveling to Skingrad, which is located southwest of the Imperial City at the end of the Gold Road. Once you arrive, track down Nigidius the Needy wandering around the north side of town and ask him about Theranis.

Getting some intel from Nigidius the Needy

For 20 gold coins, he’ll tell you that Theranis was bragging about stealing something from the castle while drinking at the Two Sisters Lodge. Unlucky for him, Captain Dion was also drinking at the lodge and overheard him. Theranis was then arrested and sent to the dungeon.

Find a Way Into the Castle

Now that you know what happened to the missing thief, head over to the West Weald and follow the trail around to arrive at Castle Skingrad. Enter the courtyard, and you should see Touttius Sextius walking around. Speak with him and ask about “Work in Castle Skingrad“. He’ll send you to talk with Shum gro-Yarug, who can be found around town midday at the Colovian Trader (noon) or the West Weald Inn (10 am). You can also speak to a Skingrad Guard nearby in the County Hall to get the same information.

With this information, track down Shum gro-Yarug and ask about Work in Castle Skingrad. He’ll tell you that he needs someone to feed the prisoners once a day. The pay is two gold per week, plus half a loaf of bread and a glass of mead each day! Accept the job, and he’ll also inform you that the dungeon guards will unlock the cell block doors if you ask them.

Visit Theranis in the Dungeons

It’s finally time to visit Theranis. Proceed to Castle Skingrad and enter the Courtyard. From there, head up the stairs on the right, then take a right at the top. Here, you’ll be facing the door to the dungeons. Use it to reach said dungeons, following along the hallway to find the Skingrad Jailor. Speak with him and choose the “I’m the slop drudge” option to gain access to the cell block.

Enter the cell block and speak with Larthjar the Laggard. He’ll ask if you’re there to rescue him (he beat up some lady). The choice is up to you. Afterward, you’ll need to raise his disposition to 70 to learn about Theranis. A couple of days ago, the Pale Lady took him. He’ll also mention that the Pale Lady took his cellmate, an Argonian, not too long ago. He put up a struggle and was bleeding all over the place.

Follow the Pale Lady

Head further down the cell block, right of Larthjar’s cell, and you’ll spot a pool of blood. At the end of the right, you’ll notice a candle with blood around it hanging on the wall. Interact with that candle to reveal a secret door. Proceed through it and follow the tunnel to reach the wine cellar. From there, keep going to arrive at a stone wall. To its left, you’ll see a handle you need to turn to open another secret door.

Go through the door and continue following the blood trail into the cellar where the wine barrels are stored. It will lead you to the giant barrel on the right side of the room. Interact with the strange candle attached to the column to open the middle barrel. Follow the new path to reach the Pale Lady, who will attack you. Take her out, then loot both of the keys from her.

Make your way to the northeastern part of the room to learn what happened to Theranis. You’ll then want to speak with the nearby Argonian who happens to be an old acquaintance. The Secret Cell Key can then be used to unlock his cell. For us, the game bugged out, and he wasn’t in the cell, so we didn’t need to use it.

Escort the Argonian out of the Castle

To learn where Theranis hid the book, you’ll need to help the Argonian get to safety. Follow the quest marker to make your escape. If anyone sees you, they will shout that the prisoners are escaping, alerting the guards (you can always pay off any bounty while delivering the book). Once you clear the castle bridge outside, the quest will update. Speak with the Argonian and ask him about the Lost Histories of Tamriel“. He’ll tell you to look under the bush near the well, behind Nerastarel’s house.

Retrieve the Lost Histories of Tamriel

After learning Theranis’ fate and helping the Argonian escape the castle, we can finally retrieve the book. It is located on the north side of Skigrad, behind Nerastarel’s house. If you entered Skingrad from the West Weald, take a right at the Skingrad Town Guard House and follow the outer wall to reach the well. Just past the tree, along the wall, you’ll spot the bush. Look under it to find the Lost Histories of Tamriel. Be sure to pick it up!

Deliver the Book to S’krivva

With the book in your possession, return to S’krivva in Bravil. Speak with her and tell her what happened. She’ll then pay you your gold, and this quest will be completed!
