Independent Thievery Walkthrough

This guide is a work-in-progress! We’ll update it as we work our way through the Thieves Guild questline!

Fencing Stolen Goods for Gold

The main way to progress through this quest is by stealing goods from across Tamriel and selling them to a fence for gold. To trigger the main Thieves Guild quests, you’ll need to earn a specified amount of gold for each one. Additionally, the gold you fence is totaled. So if you sell 1,000 gold worth of stolen goods up front, you won’t have to go back to the fence for the rest of the Thieves Guild questline. If you’re interested in doing that, check out our pro tip section on where you can find some loot that will get you close to the 1,000 gold mark.

In the list below, you’ll find each main quest of the Thieves Guild, along with who you’ll get the quest from and their location. Upon selling the required amount of gold, you’ll speak with that person to receive the main quest. In the case of the Grey Fox, he’ll sometimes send a messenger. They will show up quicker if you wait while in the Imperial City.

Where to Find the Thieves Guild Fences

As mentioned previously, to sell stolen goods, you’ll need to go through a fence, which only becomes available once you join the guild. As you rise through the guild, you’ll gain access to better fences. The better the fence, the better goods they carry, in addition to having a higher gold amount. This will allow you to sell higher-quality loot for more gold!

Pro Tip: Reaching the 1000 Gold worth of Stolen Goods Early

After you get this quest, you may want to swing by the Imperial Legion Offices in the courtyard of the Imperial City Prison. If you go there at midnight and head through the door in the back right side of the room, you’ll reach the commander’s desk. There is a chest there that you can pick the lock on, containing some ebony armor that you can steal. This can be sold to a fence, bringing the total stolen goods to nearly 1000 gold.
