How to Start A Royal Recipe

To begin the A Royal Recipe side quest, you’ll need to travel to Riverside Stable in the southeastern part of Hyrule Field. Once at the stable, locate and speak with Gotter, who will tell Link that he’s a descendant of the castle’s appointed chef.

He’ll then ask Link to keep his eyes peeled for a cookbook should the hero find himself inside Hyrule Castle.

A Royal Recipe Side Quest Guide

Find the Royal Recipe Books

From the main entrance of Hyrule Castle, follow the road as it curves left, passing by a Rusted Guardian. Enter the castle through the doorway on your right.

Inside the long hallway, the gates will shut. Use Cryonis to lift the gate, then continue heading down the hallway until you spot a Lizalfos guarding the stairway.

At the Lizalfos, head left through the doorway and follow the stairs down to reach the Guards’ Chamber.

From the Guards’ Chamber, go back up the stairs, take a left, and cross the hall to enter the doorway on the right. This will bring you into another hall filled with malice. Head as far as you can through it, then look up to spot an eye just past a doorway. Shoot it to clear the malice and head through the doorway.

Take the next left, shooting another eye again to eliminate the Malice and proceed up the stairs.

At the top, turn left, avoiding the Guardian on your right. Continue along the path, run past the second Guardian, and enter the tunnel. When you emerge, you’ll see an entrance straight ahead and slightly to the left. Quickly go through this doorway to reach the Library.

Once in the Library, you will need to find two recipe books.

To find The Royal Family’s Secret Recipe #2, head left and go up the stairs. Jump the gap to find The Royal Family’s Secret Recipe #2 on a podium. This book instructs you to mix monster extract, Tabantha wheat, cane sugar, and goat butter to create Monster Cake.

To find The Royal Family’s Secret Recipe #1, face the above podium and look on the ground below to see this book on a table. The Royal Family’s Secret Recipe #1 reveals the recipe for Fruitcake. For this recipe, you’ll need to boil two or more fruits with Tabantha wheat and cane sugar.

Gather Ingredients for Monster Cake

To craft Monster Cake, you’ll need to find the following ingredients:

  • Monster Extract
  • Tabantha Wheat
  • Cane Sugar
  • Goat Butter

To obtain the monster extract, travel to Skull Lake in Deep Akkala at night. On the left eye of the skull, you’ll find Kilton, who runs the Fang and Bone shop. Speak with him! He’ll then wander off, so you’ll need to search for him in the following villages at night:

  • Kakariko Village
  • Hateno Village
  • Rito Village
  • Zora’s Domain
  • Gerudo Town
  • Lurelin Village
  • Lake Akkala

Once you find Kilton, you’ll need to exchange monster parts to acquire nine mon. Once you’ve gotten nine mon, exchange it for the Monster Extract. You may want to try to pick up a couple to have some extras, just in case.

Tabantha Wheat

If you want to save some rupees, cut the tall grass around the Tabantha Frontier, which is in the southwestern part of Hebra, to find the Tabantha Wheat. To save time, head to Rito Village in Hebra and purchase Tabantha Wheat from Misa’s stall for 12 rupees.

Cane Sugar

You can purchase Cane Sugar for 12 rupees at Misa’s stall in Rito Village, located in the Hebra region.

Goat Butter

Purchase Goat Butter from Misa’s stall in Rito Village, which is located in the Hebra region, for 12 rupees.

Gather Ingredients for Fruitcake

To craft Fruitcake, you’ll need to find the following ingredients:

  • Fruit x2
  • Tabantha Wheat
  • Cane Sugar

You can collect fruit from trees all around Hyrule. Kakariko village has a bunch of apple trees! Alternatively, you can purchase some Hydromelon for 16 rupees from Emri’s stall in Kara Kara Bazaar, which is along the main road between Gerudo Town and the Gerudo Desert Gateway.

Tabantha Wheat

If you want to save some rupees, cut the tall grass around the Tabantha Frontier, which is in the southwestern part of Hebra, to find the Tabantha Wheat. To save time, head to Rito Village in Hebra and purchase Tabantha Wheat from Misa’s stall for 12 rupees.

Cane Sugar

You can buy Cane Sugar for 12 rupees at Misa’s stall in Rito Village, located in the Hebra region.

Craft the Royal Dishes

Once you’ve gathered all the ingredients, travel to the Riverside Stable. Use the campfire next to Gotter to craft the dishes. Next, hand over the Fruitcake to complete the quest and receive 100 rupees. Speak with Gotter again and give him the Monster Cake to receive an additional 100 rupees.
