How to Begin the Avenge the Ironhands Quest

You’ll get this quest when trying to enter the city. Approach the gate, and the Gauntlet will demand a coin. You’ll then be scanned by the watcher, who will label you a threat. Choose the first option (the 2nd leads to everyone’s disapproval) to trigger an event.

Follow the Gnomes

You can follow the gnomes east of the checkpoint (north of Sword Coast Couriers) to a cave.

Avenge the Ironhands Baldur's Gate III Quest location

Speak to Wulbren

Enter it, then locate and speak with Wulbren. During the conversation, he’ll ask that you destroy the Steel Watch Foundry. If you agree, you’ll receive a runepowder bomb to help.

Destroy the Steel Watch Foundry

Before putting that bomb to work, you may want to visit the Iron Throne during the Blade of Frontiers or Avenge the Drowned quests. You’ll have the opportunity to save some Gondians who are being held captive to force their family members to work in the Steel Watch Foundry.

Saving all (or some) of them will get you the Save the Gondians quest, which will be along the path to blowing up the foundry.

When you are ready, travel to the Steel Watch Foundry in the southwestern part of Lower City. You’ll need to pick the lock on the gate to get inside. After that, there will be at least one watcher you’ll have to deal with.

From there, pick the lock on the front door and head inside, passing through the double iron doors. This is where the Save the Gondians quest will come into play as the captives will rebel, leading to a fight.

Once this has been resolved, you’ll want to head to the Neurocitor further in the facility to place the bomb. If you defeat all of the guards, you can loot a key that unlocks the security office. Head through there on the southwestern side of the room.

From there, take the steps down and keep working until you reach the Control Centre. Approach the center of the room to start a fight against 3 Hellfire Watchers and Steel Watcher Titan. They all three like to inflict maim on you, which prevents you from moving, and then when their health gets around 50, they trigger their self-destruct protocol.

The Steel Watcher Titan will also enter a bulwark status where it has extra health and will launch a salvo in a specified area, so avoid that. When its health gets low, it will start to self-destruct as well. Make sure to hammer away at it to break its stance so that this doesn’t happen.

Once you finish them all off, interact with the Neural Switchboard on the east side of the room. You can select the intelligence check option to learn more about it and that it controls every watcher. You’ll then be able to plant the runepowder bomb on the Neurocitor, leading to the big finale.

Afterward, you’ll be back outside, where Wulbren will show up. He’ll then task you with killing the remaining Gondians. You can choose to side with him or protect the Gondians, which involves installing Barcus Wroot as their new leader. The quest will be completed after you make your choice.
